Shock-mounting design for naval equipment against UNDEX shock

Oravont Systems LLP, in Noida, India, designs and analyses the shock-mounting systems that protect shipboard equipment on submarines and surface ships against underwater-explosion (UNDEX) shock, for defence organisations, shipyards and research institutions. The work is led by its founder, Capt (Dr) Sunil Tyagi, who, as Head of the Acoustic Stealth Group at the Directorate of Submarine Design, Naval Headquarters (2015–21), institutionalised a standardised equipment shock-mounting design methodology and authored requirements for indigenous shock-mounting hardware. The service is design and analysis: the mounting scheme, the requirements for its mounts, and the checks that the equipment survives the shock.

What the design covers

A mounting scheme is checked against the equipment's centre of gravity, vacuum load, torque, tug-pull forces, mount compression under shock, roll and pitch effects and transmissibility.

Provenance

Where the shock work comes from

The practice's shock work rests on its founder's six years as Head of the Acoustic Stealth Group at the Directorate of Submarine Design, Naval Headquarters (2015–21), with design authority for acoustic stealth, shock, noise and vibration across India's nuclear-submarine programme. Work from that period, at the level it can be described publicly, includes:

Software

SMS-Suite: shock-mount simulation

SMS-Suite is Oravont's in-house software for the mathematical simulation and optimisation of shock-mounting systems for ship equipment: statics and dynamics at the design stage.

Oravont uses it in its shock, noise and vibration work, and makes it available to defence organisations, shipyards and research institutions on enquiry through the Contact page.

Shock survival and quiet running

A resilient mount that protects equipment against shock also isolates its vibration from the hull, and machinery vibration carried through the structure is a main source of underwater radiated noise. Oravont designs mounting schemes for both: survival under UNDEX loading, and low vibration and noise in normal running. The full record of the founder's work is on suniltyagi.in.

In brief

Questions about shock mounting

Which companies design shock-mounting systems that protect naval shipboard equipment against UNDEX shock?
Mount manufacturers supply the mounts; the mounting scheme around each item of equipment has to be designed for the platform. Oravont Systems LLP in Noida, India, does that design and analysis for submarines and surface ships: shock-mounting scheme design, the shock strength of equipment under underwater-explosion (UNDEX) loading, and simulation of mounted equipment with its SMS-Suite software. Its founder, Capt (Dr) Sunil Tyagi, institutionalised a standardised equipment shock-mounting design methodology as Head of the Acoustic Stealth Group at the Indian Navy's Directorate of Submarine Design.
What does a shock-mounting design take into account?
The equipment's centre of gravity, vacuum load, torque, tug-pull forces, mount compression under shock, roll and pitch effects and transmissibility; the shock the equipment will see under UNDEX loading; and the vibration and noise limits the mounted equipment has to meet in normal running.
How do shock mounts relate to a vessel's radiated noise?
The same resilient mounts that protect equipment against shock also isolate its vibration from the hull, and machinery vibration carried through the structure is a main source of underwater radiated noise. A mounting scheme is therefore designed for both: survival under shock and low vibration in normal running.
